New Collection Added: Lang Monastery, Upper Dolpo

The textual collection of Lang Monastery comprises 98 canonical manuscripts. For reasons of safekeeping, these manuscripts were brought from their original location in Lang Valley, near Bicher Village in Upper Dolpo, to the more centrally located Nesar Monastery in Bicher. All of these manuscripts were documented by the TMPV in 2018. Their textual contents have now been systematically catalogued, and images of the original manuscripts, together with the catalogue data, are available through the rKTs archive.

The largest part of the collection consists of volumes belonging to Sūtra collections, of which three different sets, partly preserved in fragments, have been identified. Another substantial, though rather heterogeneous, portion comprises volumes of the Śatasāhasrikāprajñāpāramitā (’bum). Due to textual and stylistic similarities, distinguishing individual sets within this portion is extremely difficult, but it seems clear that at least three different sets are represented. The remaining volumes contain other building blocks of canonical literature, including individual larger sūtras, a dhāraṇī collection, and fragments of tantric material.
